White Oak (Quercus alba)An American Hardwood with a light to medium brown heartwood which has an olive cast. The sapwood is light brown to white and is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Grain is straight with a course uneven texture.
Rot resistance: Rated as very durable and is often used in boatbuilding and cooperage applications.
Workability: Good results with both hand an machine tools. Has moderately high shrinkage values which result in mediocre dimensional stability, especially in flatsawn boards. Can react with iron (particularly when wet) causing staining and discoloration. Responds well to steam-bending. Glues, stains and finishes well.
